Eisenhower Dollar Coin
The first Eisenhower Dollar was issued in 1971 honoring both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the first landing of man on the moon. This new 'Ike Dollar' was the first dollar coin to be issued in the United States since 1935. The proposal for the issuance of the Eisenhower Dollar nearly died in Congress due to a disagreement between the House and the Senate over the composition of the coin. After 18 months of deliberation, a compromise was finally reached to issue the coin both ways. Eisenhower Dollar issued for general circulation were copper nickel clad while collectors' coins were struck in 40% silver.
